A podiatry Doppler is a handheld ultrasound device used by trained clinicians as part of lower-limb vascular assessment. Huntleigh also lists an ABI kit and an ankle-and-toe pressure kit. These are bundled assessment systems rather than extra handheld Doppler models. Compare the contents and intended use of the kit with the equipment already held by the clinic before paying for duplicated accessories.
What a vascular Doppler can and cannot tell you
A handheld vascular Doppler detects movement and converts the returned ultrasound signal into sound. Some models also show direction, velocity information or a waveform. These outputs can support a broader vascular assessment when used and interpreted by a suitably trained person.
The device should not be described as independently diagnosing peripheral arterial disease, deep-vein thrombosis or varicose veins. NICE places ankle brachial pressure index measurement within an assessment that also considers symptoms, the legs and feet, and pulses. NICE also states that a normal or raised ankle brachial pressure index alone must not be used to exclude peripheral arterial disease in a person with diabetes.
Buy the equipment that matches the assessment method, documentation requirements and referral pathway used by the service. A feature is only useful if the operator is trained to acquire and interpret the information correctly.
Audio-only, bidirectional or waveform display?
Audio-only Dopplers
An audio-only unit is the simplest option. The operator listens to the signal through the speaker or headphones and records the finding according to local procedure. The Huntleigh D900 is a current audio-only model with interchangeable probes. The UltraTec PD1cv is a fixed-probe alternative.
Compare sound quality in the intended room, speaker and headphone connections, controls that can be operated while wearing gloves, and the method used to document findings. Do not assume that a lower purchase price means a lower whole-life cost once the probe, cuff, gel, case, servicing and replacement parts are included.
Bidirectional display
The Huntleigh SD2 adds visual information about blood-flow direction. It uses interchangeable probes and the manufacturer lists the probe separately. This format may suit a service that needs more information than audio alone but does not require the storage and display features of the DMX.
Ask the supplier to demonstrate the complete quoted configuration. A photograph of the main unit does not show every item needed for the clinic’s intended assessment process.
Digital waveform display and storage
The Huntleigh DMX has a colour display, bidirectional waveform, audio recording, MicroSD data storage and integrated charging and connectivity. Those features may support documentation and review, but they also add workflow questions.
Before buying, confirm how recordings will be identified, stored, transferred and handled under the clinic’s information-governance policy. Check which cables, software or accessories are included, who provides training and how the device will be supported if the workflow changes.
Fixed and interchangeable probes
UltraTec’s PD1v and PD1cv use fixed vascular probes. Huntleigh’s D900, SD2 and DMX use interchangeable probes sold separately.
A fixed probe produces a simple, self-contained unit, but the probe frequency and style are chosen at purchase. An interchangeable system provides more flexibility, although the buyer must budget for the correct probe and protect the connector and cable during routine use.
UltraTec currently lists the PD1v with an 8 MHz pencil or flat probe, and the PD1cv with a fixed 5 or 8 MHz probe. Huntleigh lists vascular probes in several frequencies. Frequency selection should be based on the manufacturer’s intended-use information, current training and the service’s assessment method. It should not be selected from a generic rule in an online article.

Huntleigh Dopplex D900

Huntleigh describes the D900 as an entry-level, audio-only, non-directional Doppler. It has a mono headphone socket and accepts interchangeable probes. The probe is sold separately.
The main buying question is the complete configuration. Ask for a written list of the probe, cuffs, sphygmomanometer, gel, headphones, case and any training included. Confirm the service and repair route before purchase.
Huntleigh Dopplex SD2

The SD2 provides bidirectional blood-flow information, flow direction, stereo headphone output and interchangeable probes. It sits between the audio-only D900 and the digital DMX in Huntleigh’s current range.
Confirm which visual information is available on the quoted version, which probe is appropriate for the intended use and how findings will be recorded in the clinic’s existing system.
Huntleigh Dopplex DMX

The DMX provides a colour display, a bidirectional waveform, audio recording, MicroSD storage and interchangeable probes. Huntleigh also lists integrated charging and connectivity.
These features make the DMX the most data-rich handheld option in this comparison, but that does not make it the right purchase for every clinic. Compare the data features with the actual documentation and review needs of the service.
UltraTec PD1v
UltraTec describes the PD1v as a pocket vascular Doppler with a fixed 8 MHz pencil or flat probe. It has a built-in speaker, an optional headset connection and a chart-recorder output for non-directional waveforms. The current product page states that UltraTec products have a standard three-year warranty.
The manufacturer’s linked brochure carries a 2015 copyright notice. Buyers should therefore request the current datasheet and written confirmation of the supplied specification rather than relying on an older brochure found online.
UltraTec PD1cv

The PD1cv is a fixed-probe vascular Doppler offered in 5 or 8 MHz versions. Audio is available through its speaker or an optional headset. The frequency is selected when the device is purchased, so confirm the intended use and training requirement before ordering.
The current page uses an old reference to “EEC standards”. Ask the manufacturer or supplier to identify the device’s present regulatory marking and provide the current declaration and instructions rather than relying on that wording.
Buying checklist for a podiatry Doppler
Ask the supplier to confirm the following in writing:
- The device’s intended purpose and the exact product code.
- The probe type and frequency included in the quotation.
- Audio, directional, waveform, storage and reporting functions.
- Cuffs, sphygmomanometer, gel, headphones, charger, case and other accessories supplied.

Follow the current instructions for the exact device and probe. Do not use a cleaning method copied from a different model. Keep the instructions accessible and record the device identity, location, maintenance, repair and incident history in the clinic’s equipment system.
Check the probe, cable, connector and casing before use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove damaged equipment from use and follow the organisation’s reporting and repair procedure. Ask the manufacturer or authorised service provider about any inspection or performance check required for the model.
Buying a second-hand vascular Doppler
A used Doppler may reduce the initial cost, but the buyer needs enough evidence to identify and assess the complete system. Check:
- the manufacturer, model, serial number and regulatory label;
- the probe model, frequency, cable and connector condition;
- the current instructions and cleaning information;
- service, repair and performance-check records;
- battery, charger and accessory condition;
- the availability of current manufacturer or authorised support;
- any stored patient data and how it has been removed;
- ownership and the seller’s authority to sell the item.
Do not treat a device powering on or producing sound as proof that it is suitable for clinical use. Arrange an appropriate inspection or performance check before use, based on the manufacturer’s guidance and the buyer’s device-management procedure.

The manufacturer is the primary source for current device specifications, instructions and service arrangements. A specialist supplier may offer a package containing the Doppler, probe, cuffs and training.
