Podiatry Chair Buying Guide for UK Clinics

This podiatry chair buying guide helps you compare treatment chairs and couches using the points that affect daily clinical work: patient access, your working position, published load, controls, cleaning, servicing and space. The best choice is the model that fits your patients, treatments, room and support requirements.

Supplier terminology is inconsistent. One company may call a product a podiatry chair, another a couch and another a treatment table. Compare the specification and intended use rather than relying on the product name.

Choose the chair around its daily use

Start with the work carried out in the room. Record the positions and access you use most often, then test each shortlisted model against them.

  • Routine nail and skin care
  • Nail surgery and procedures that need a flatter patient position
  • Biomechanical assessments that may need prone or supine positioning
  • Shared use by podiatrists, physiotherapists or other practitioners
  • Patients who need a low transfer height, clear side access or space for a hoist
  • The range of patient sizes treated in the clinic

A dedicated podiatry chair often provides divided leg sections and a shorter seat arrangement for foot access. A general examination couch may provide a longer flat surface and suit a shared treatment room. Some powered models add tilt, powered backrests, powered leg sections or a documented CPR position. These features vary by model.

Measure the room in working positions

The catalogue footprint rarely tells the full story. Measure the room with the backrest reclined, leg sections extended and the chair at the positions you expect to use. Allow space for the practitioner stool, drill, trolley, lamp, foot control and patient movement.

  • Overall length with leg sections extended
  • Overall width including armrests
  • Base dimensions and the direction in which the chair moves
  • Clearance around doors, cupboards, sockets and sinks
  • Space needed for side transfer or a mobile hoist
  • Delivery access through doors, corridors, stairs and lifts
  • Final installed weight and any floor or access limits that need checking

Vertical-lift designs can use less floor space during height adjustment than chairs that travel backwards as they rise. Ask the supplier to demonstrate the complete movement path rather than measuring the base alone.

Check patient access and transfer

Minimum seat height matters for patients who find stepping up difficult. Armrests that swing back or fold down can open the side of the chair, but their movement and locking method differ. Check how the patient approaches, turns and transfers while the chair is in its lowest safe position.

If the clinic uses a hoist, confirm the required under-frame clearance and test the specific hoist and chair combination. A manufacturer stating hoist clearance does not prove that every hoist base will fit.

Check your working position

Compare the full height range with your preferred seated position, stool and working distance. The highest foot position can matter as much as the published couch height. Divided leg sections may help you bring one foot closer, but check the extension length, lateral movement and support provided.

Try the chair with the stool and equipment layout you plan to use. A specification sheet cannot show how easily you can move your knees, place the foot control or reach the drill and instruments.

Compare controls and powered movements

Basic models may power only the height. Other models add powered tilt, backrest or individual leg sections. Extra motors can reduce manual repositioning, but they also increase purchase cost and add components that may later need repair.

Check the following points during a demonstration:

  • Which sections are electric, hydraulic or gas assisted
  • The location and number of foot or hand controls
  • Movement speed and how easily small adjustments can be made
  • Control leads and pedals that could obstruct movement or cleaning
  • Memory, return-to-zero or battery backup functions
  • The manual procedure to follow after a power or component failure

Do not treat a foot control as automatically cleaner than a hand control. Check the manufacturer cleaning instructions and include every control in the clinic cleaning procedure.

Compare the published load figure

Manufacturers use terms such as safe working load, lifting capacity and maximum user weight. Do not assume they mean the same thing. Ask the supplier which limit applies during movement, in every treatment position and with fitted accessories.

Choose a model that covers the clinic population without operating close to a stated limit. A wider bariatric model may also change room access, practitioner reach and delivery requirements, so assess the whole setup.

Confirm emergency positioning

Do not assume that every podiatry chair lies flat or provides a suitable position for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Trendelenburg tilt and a CPR function are different features. Ask the manufacturer to explain and demonstrate the emergency procedure for the exact configuration being quoted, then include that procedure in staff training.

Check upholstery and cleaning instructions

Look for surfaces that your team can reach and clean, including the underside of sections, seams, hinges, controls and the chair base. Claims such as antimicrobial or antibacterial do not replace cleaning and decontamination.

Request the current cleaning instructions before ordering. Check that the upholstery and plastics are compatible with the products and contact times used in your clinic. The MHRA advises healthcare organisations to consider decontamination requirements before acquiring a reusable medical device.

Calculate servicing and whole life cost

Compare the cost of owning the chair, not only the initial quote. The MHRA Managing Medical Devices guidance asks healthcare organisations to consider purchase, operation, maintenance, consumables, training, renewal and disposal.

  • Warranty length and exclusions for upholstery, controls and accidental damage
  • Recommended inspection and planned maintenance intervals
  • Who can service the chair in your area
  • Call-out charges, response times and loan equipment
  • Availability and price of controls, actuators, gas struts, castors and upholstery
  • Expected product life and support for older models
  • Delivery, installation, training and removal of the old chair

Keep the instructions, serial number, purchase record and maintenance history with the clinic equipment register. Follow the manufacturer maintenance schedule rather than applying a fixed annual interval to every chair.

Check the medical device information

For a chair marketed as a medical device in Great Britain, check its intended purpose, manufacturer details, current conformity marking and instructions for use. Imported products may also show a UK responsible person. The rules for Great Britain and Northern Ireland differ, and current CE acceptance dates depend on the device and regulatory route. Check the current MHRA guidance rather than relying on a supplier summary.

Buying a used podiatry chair

A used chair can reduce the initial cost, but the condition and support history matter. The MHRA says prospective buyers of second-hand medical devices should receive usage and service history, maintenance records and details of reconditioning work.

  • Confirm the manufacturer, exact model, serial number and approximate age
  • Ask for the instructions for use, service record, repair invoices and any reconditioning record
  • Check that the seller owns the chair and can identify any finance or lease arrangement
  • Inspect upholstery, seams, arms, leg sections, castors, cables, pedals and hand controls
  • Ask a competent service provider to inspect and test powered equipment before clinical use
  • Check current safety alerts and the availability of replacement parts
  • Agree collection, disassembly, lifting, transport, installation and decontamination responsibilities in writing

  7. What maintenance does the manufacturer specify?
  8. Who provides local servicing and what response time is offered?
  9. Which parts remain available and what does the warranty exclude?
  10. Does the price include VAT, delivery, installation, training and removal of the old chair?
  11. Can you test the quoted configuration before ordering?

What is the best type of podiatry chair?

There is no single best model for every clinic. Match the chair to the treatments, patient access needs, room, working position, load requirements and servicing support. Test the complete configuration before buying when practical.

Does every podiatry chair lie flat?

No. Movement ranges differ, and a tilted or reclined position is not automatically a documented CPR position. Check the instructions and ask the supplier to demonstrate the exact model.

How often should a podiatry chair be serviced?

Follow the manufacturer instructions and the clinic equipment-management plan. The appropriate interval depends on the model, use and operating environment. Arrange inspection promptly if movement becomes unusual, parts loosen or damage appears.

Can a practice buy a second-hand podiatry chair?

Yes, but inspect the chair and obtain its usage, service, repair and reconditioning history. Check parts support, decontamination and transport before paying, then arrange appropriate inspection before putting it into clinical use.
