Podiatry Supplies Glossary – Part A

Welcome to part 1 of  the largest Podiatry supplies A-Z glossary on the internet!

This list gives details for some of the commonly used  podiatry supplies products and terms.

Our aim is to cover a wide range of terms from podiatry equipment to consumables, brands and common podiatry words you can come across.

This is a work in progress project and by no means complete.

A

ACRIFLEX a cream for the treatment of minor burns scalds, cuts, sunburn, and infected cracked skin. It’s active ingredient is Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.25% w/w. It can be used by diabetics and children under supervision. Acriflex can be purchased from Canonbury Products

Abrasive Caps

ABRASIVE CAPS are a disposable dome shaped paper cap that fits on the end of a disposable or reusable mandrel. Used for sanding, removal of hard skin. Single Use. Available in different grades, Rough, Medium Coarse, Extra Coarse, and different sizes.

ABRASIVE STRIP similar to an abrasive cap, in a strip of varying lengths and sizes. Available in different grades (extra fine, fine, medium, coarse, extra course).

ACHILLES HEEL PAD usually a soft material sleeve that provides comfort and support to the heel & Achilles area. Supplied in a range of sizes and materials.

Acriflex Cream

ACRIFLEX a topical chlorhexidine Gluconate antiseptic cream for the treatment of minor burns, abrasions, scratches, infected cracked skin.

ACRYTENSIL a quick drying plastic dressing for applying to nails. available in various strengths.  A dressing for fissures and breaks in the skin. As a securing agent for stainless steel braces. As an aid in the treatment of onychomycosis. As a light application to protect unbroken chilblains.

Acurata Rotating Instruments

ACURATA a range of rotating instruments & burrs used in the removal of thick grypotic nails or callus. High durability with low heat generation.

ADHESIVES  ARCH SUPPORTS used for stability and support under the arch of the foot, commonly built into orthotics or specialist insoles, available as an insert.

ADISONS FORCEPS a podiatry tool used used for routine treatments to grasp and hold items. Usually stainless steel.

ADJUSTABLE NIGHT SPLINT used at night obviously! these supports are worn on the lower leg to stabilise and hold the foot or big toe in a particular position. Commonly used to treat plantar fascia, Achilles heel  and arch pain as well as bunions.

ALLEVYN a brand name for a range of products including a wound dressing. Supplied by Smith and Nephew.

AMERIGEL is a wound dressing produced by Oakin. It is used for the treatment of open wounds, burns cuts and scrapes.

AKILEINE is a range of foot creams and ointments, produced by Asepta in France. Used for treatment of foot related conditions such as dry skin, excessive sweating and aching feet.

ANTISEPTICS topical creams and ointments for the treatment of mild skin conditions.

APPOINTMENT CARDS a paper based record system for taking basic patient notes. Still used in many practices, usually updated to computer records.

APPLIANCE MATERIALS are used in the production of insoles and devices used for treatment of common foot conditions.

ARCH PAD a pre-made or custom built device for supporting the arch of the foot. Made from foam padding or silicone.

ARTICARE COLD SPRAY can of spray used on contusions, distortions and sprains. Used when a quick focused dose of cold is needed. Used commonly in impact related sports and activities.

Self Aspirating Syringe

ASPIRATING SYRINGE a device used for administering injections in podiatry procedures, usually local anaesthetic. Reusable autoclaveable or plastic and single use.

ALGEOS international podiatry supplier based in Liverpool England. One of the larger podiatry suppliers.

ADISONS FORCEPS a tweezer type instrument device used for handling tissue.

APOLLO NIPPERS a brand of podiatry nippers. Sold through Algeos.

AQUEOUS CREAM a well known cream for treating dry skin.

AUTOCLAVE a piece of equipment used in the sterilisation of podiatry instruments and tools. Ranging in size and price, autoclaves are commonly used.

The podiatry supplies glossary is a work in progress document designed to give podiatrists and foot specialists an up-to-date and historical record of podiatry supplies used in the profession.
